Suzuki Guitar School, Vol 1: Guitar Part, Book

At Carleston Elementary School, we have a Suzuki-inspired guitar classroom. Our guitar material comes from New Dimensions in Classical Guitar for Children by Sonia Michelson and Suzuki Guitar School, Volume 1. We learn on classical guitars and are seated in the classical playing position (with foot stools) because these facilitate playing more than any other playing position or type of guitar.

The purpose of these arrangements is to provide a variety of interesting and challenging material for Suzuki guitar students who are beyond Book 1 and are playing in a Suzuki guitar group class. The arrangements allow students, who may be widely divergent in playing levels, the opportunity to perform together in the Book 1 repertoire. These arrangements include the original melodies transposed one octave higher giving the student practice in reading ledger lines and playing beyond the 12th fret, a obbligato melody that poses technical challenges to advanced students, a simple chordal accompaniment that gives the Book 2 student excellent free stroke arpeggio practice, and a bass part that gives the student practice in reading the lower ledger lines. These parts work well together, but can also be used with the original melodies.

Classical Guitar Method Volume 1 by Bradford Werner. Free PDF sheet music for classical guitar (102 pages). This book teaches beginner guitar skills with a focus on the rich pedagogical tradition of classical guitar. Most learning objectives are covered through pieces and duets with free video lessons allowing students to perform full pieces from the first lesson. A qualified teacher or following the free lesson videos should provide students with a healthy start to playing music on the guitar. This is the 2020 edition. Also see Volume Two to continue learning. If you like the book you can support the site here.
